A ticket and a dream

A ticket and a dream

When most people lose a job, their lives end up in a tail spin. Mortgages, children to feed, and marriages to support put stress levels in high gear. For me it was booking plane tickets, breaking leases, and throwing my possessions in a storage unit.

A year ago, I decided that I had to travel to see the world. My first dedicated desk job was already starting to eat at me. The world was waiting to be explored and my eyes were dying to see it. Telling my closest friends of my plans sparked even more excitement. The only problem was, I didn’t have the funds to make it happen. Right now it was just a dream. A goal that seemed never to be realized.

As the weeks went by, I was lucky enough to have my fix of being outdoors and adventuring. Each weekend was filled with playing in the gorgeous landscapes that Colorado has to offer. Between camping weekends and peak bagging 14ers; to cruising down groomers and skinning up old ski resorts, I was living a life I couldn’t have been happier with. I knew it was going to be difficult to leave behind my active life and amazing friends back in CO. How can I just up and leave a place where I am doing all the activities I love? I knew deep down inside that I had to do my year of travel soon before I start settling into a routine I won’t be able to get out of. But how?

Fast forward to this year, on St. Patrick’s Day, I told a friend I just wanted to be laid off. This would give me the excuse I needed to travel the world. She told me why I just don’t do it anyway. I came up with lame excuses. Who knew that this conversation would be a premonition of things to come.

The following week I was brought into the bosses office.  Within the first few seconds the magic words came out of his mouth and my life as I knew it would be changing. My mind was spinning and all I could think of was my travel adventure.  All the different possibilities were bouncing around my head: what country would I be going to first, what am I going to do with all my shit, what date am I leaving, what do I need to pack, etc.

Before I knew it, I had my one way ticket to New Zealand.

Sometimes the universe has a way of giving you the push you need in life.

When life gives you an opportunity, you always accept its invitation.
